Since February 2008, government has added 97,000 workers, this despite cuts in state and local governments. This during a recession during which the net job loss is pegged at about 5.1 million.
The census bureau put the total federal civilian payroll at higher than 2.7 million in 2007, with well over a million in the military. Paul Light of NYU and Brookings adds contractors and grantees to this number to come up with a "true size" of government that he claims was over 14.6 million as of 2005.
